How it works
Male-pattern loss traces back to DHT miniaturizing your follicles. Finasteride disables much of the type 2 5-alpha-reductase enzyme that produces DHT, easing the pressure so follicles can recover.
Effectiveness
Research shows finasteride arrests further loss in about 80–90% of men and produces visible regrowth in roughly two-thirds. Earlier is better, and its peak comes alongside minoxidil, where about 94% of men improved over a year.
Tablet or topical
The 1 mg oral tablet is the standard and most-studied form. A topical version targets the scalp with less DHT circulating in the blood, potentially trimming systemic side effects while keeping most of the effect.
Side-effect reality
A minority of men report sexual side effects, usually reversible after stopping. As a hormone-active drug it's prescription-only and unsuitable for women who might become pregnant. Want firmer DHT control? Dutasteride is the stronger option to discuss with a doctor.
